Quincy University provides, through its Offices of Academic and Learning Support Services, individualized services and advocacy for students with documented disabilities. Quincy University will make reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities using the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. By federal law, a person with a disability is any person who has: a physical or mental impairment; a record of such impairment; or is regarded as having such an impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities such as self-care, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, or learning.

A student requesting services must provide documentation of their disability in the form of a diagnosis and list of required accommodations from a qualified professional in that field. A recent Individual Education Plan (IEP) from a secondary school will be accepted in most cases.

Students with disabilities may use a number of services intended to reduce the effects that a disability may have on their educational experience. Faculty members do not lower academic standards, but instead the University provides support to help students demonstrate their academic abilities.

Students may request services by registering with the Office of Academic Support Services and providing information that documents their disability. The Application for Services Form provides an initial step in communication between the student and the Office of Academic Support; we suggest students begin by filling out this form and returning it to our Office. Individual assistance is provided in selecting the services that will provide access to the academic programs and facilities of the University. Students are encouraged to discuss their specific needs for accommodations with an Academic Support staff member within the first two weeks of each semester, as it is in the student’s best interest to self-identify and self-advocate to professors at the beginning of the semester. While students will have access to accommodations at any point throughout the semester, speaking to their instructors about their needs at the beginning of the semester, rather than waiting until after the first test or until the end of the semester, demonstrates a high degree of self-advocacy and motivation. 

Once the documentation is received, the Office of Academic Support Services provides letters of verification that the student then presents to faculty. This initiates an interaction between student and faculty that provides an opportunity to share information about a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and the kind of reasonable accommodation being requested. Students and professors then negotiate the arrangements for testing and other accommodations.  This communication gives the student and faculty member the opportunity to collaborate to determine what practices will best meet the student’s needs. Quincy University places a strong emphasis on inclusive teaching practices and most faculty members are highly motivated to vary their teaching methods to reach all students’ particular learning styles and needs. An Academic Support Services staff member will be available to meet regularly with each student to evaluate the services provided and the student’s progress. Planning for accommodations in advance is the responsibility of the student.

  • Dragon Systems Naturally Speaking continuous speech recognition software
  • Inspiration software to strengthen critical thinking, comprehension and writing skills across the curriculum. Students can build graphic organizers to represent concepts and relationships and use the integrated outlining capability to further organize ideas for papers.
  • Draftbuilder software takes students through planning, note-taking, organizing, citing resources and preparing a rough draft in every genre and every curriculum area to assist with drafting and building papers.
